PA Consulting’s Bill Young is baffled by the number of hits an interview with one of his colleagues on wearable technology got. For him, cost savings and efficiencies are much more interesting.
Please would you all stop clicking on ‘Wearables — suitable for all industries’. My colleague, Simon Hall is becoming insufferable. After 30,000 hits in 24 hours it is impossible to share an office with him.
I can see why people are interested in a health patch that monitors patients remotely. I can understand how wearable devices could help workers in many industrial situations. And I can certainly get excited by how cheap ‘cool stuff’ becomes when produced by the hundreds of millions. But I do not comprehend how Simon’s two minute interview by Sarah O’ Connor for FT.com gets 30,000 hits in a day.
There is no denying that Simon knows his stuff. He talks at conferences about everything from Apple Watches to insulin monitors. But 30’000 hits is outrageous. I have been delighted and honoured to blog on these pages and find it highly satisfying when someone from the remote corners of my network responds, to either agree with or simply acknowledge an article. But how, I ask you, am I supposed to compete in coffee-machine debates with this social media superstar?
As I said, it is potential cost reduction and efficiency improvement that get me excited. According to Simon, a remote health-monitoring patch could be as cheap as a daily newspaper if produced in hundreds of millions, potentially transforming medical treatments for everyone. And hazardous jobs would be made safer and more efficient by the technologies in sensors and monitors we are already seeing in the leisure industry. But, and forgive me if I am wrong, I just don’t believe that anything in our procurement world will ever go viral.
Perhaps we in the buying community should just get used to doing our thing quietly and without fuss, confident in the value of the outcomes, and leave the limelight to others.
